      One advantage of working with ion sensitive electrodes (ISE), is the possibility of obtaining data using an economical alternative vs otherwise potentially expensive instrumentation. ISEs are electrochemical sensors that can be used directly in the mg/L range. The ion-selective electrode must be used in conjunction with a @[email protected] (i.e. 'outer' or 'external' @[email protected]) to form a complete electrochemical cell. The measured potential differences (ion-selective electrode vs. outer @[email protected] potentials) are linearly dependent on the logarithm of the activity of a given ion in solution.
