The Fox River flows east through Oshkosh and into Lake Winnebago at its west central shore, then flows out at the northwest shore, around Doty Island at Neenah-Menasha to Little Lake Butte des Morts.
The river then flows northeast and empties into Green Bay and serves as Location: Winnebago, Calumet, and Fond du Lac. The Menasha lock is the furthest upriver lock in the system of locks on the lower Fox River allowing navigation between Lake Winnebago and the lower Fox River, and ultimately, the Great Lakes.

Before the days of GPS, I bought this book showing Lake Winnebago and the Fox River to the mouth of Green Bay. It breaks the system down into 35 pages showing most of the reefs and rock piles along with bottom contours and degrees of hardness (mud & gravel).
It's a great tool if you're a perch fisherman. The data comes from NOAA and is very accurate. Lake Winnebago serves as the outlet or “drain” for over 5, square miles of land. This represents ~10% of the land area of Wisconsin. These watersheds are called the Wolf River (top gray area in map) and Upper Fox (lower portion) Basins.
Inflow to Lake Winnebago is currently estimated n cubic feet per second (cfs) after averag cfs over the last two weeks. Most of the snowpack in the Fox and Wolf river basins has melted and flood waters are beginning to recede on the Wolf River at New London and Shiocton and the Fox River at Princeton and Berlin.
At the confluence of the Fox River and Lake Winnebago, the town’s early entrepreneurs and industrialists sought the promise of waterpower to fuel their mills and kick-start the engine of commerce. Taming the Fox with dams, canals, and a lock, Menasha initially made its mark with flour mills and lumber-based industry.
The Wisconsin DNR recently released a report that provides a summary of results from their bottom trawling surveys in Lake Winnebago.
